Where to practice
Where do we find a place to PRACTICE?
- One of the most difficult obstacles for coaching youth basketball at any level is finding practice facilities. As we all know, more and more schools are charging high prices for practice time in their gyms. To make matters worse, winter is a time when gym time is at a premium for all of the various youth, high school, and adult leagues that run here in this basketball crazy state. Below are some ideas to help assist you in this.
- Keep your team to 7-8 dedicated players and find another team to practice with. Splitting an $85 court rental fee between 15 players, once a week becomes a lower cost to parents and gives teams a team to scrimmage with for a few minutes at the close of practices. Be sure to book the practice times well in advance at your local elementary or junior high. In some districts, as UC Bantam teams, we get a slightly better rate than other renters. Reserve these ahead of time and have parents pay the practice fees in advance so that it is taken care of up front.
- Rental Insurance paperwork is available by emailing as directed below under PRACTICE INSURANCE FORMS.
- Be willing to practice early mornings. This often is a time that will be open at schools.
- Use careful practice planning to have quick and effective practices planned. Using the coaches manual under the Coaches Tools link can help. This is the best way to keep the cost of practice down - don't waste the time you have.
- Talk with your other local coaches and veteran Bantam coaches to get other ideas that are specific to your area.
-
If you find a location to use and need practice insurance for that venue and is not listed on the Practice Ins link, please email ucbantam@comcast.net and for $35 we can obtain one specific to that venue for your team. If this option saves your team rental fees, by all means let us know and we will order that for you.
Bonneville Elementary, 1245 N 800 W, Orem has practice openings!

**Important Note**

How to choose a BANTAM LEAGUE division
Choosing the Proper Division for Your Team
- Once a division is set for the season it cannot be changed.
- Please be as realistic as possible when choosing a division to give your team the best chance to develop.
- B divisions are labeled as the B National and B Amercian leagues when the season begins. Players and parents do not need to know there is any distinction between the 2. They are VERY close in level of play and athletes, experience is often the difference. We strive to put players in the best situations for their growth.
Boys 8th Grade & 7th Grades
- A division: These teams are chosen by area HS staff or Utah Bantam staff (8th, 7th ONLY, lower grades may enter as warranted)
- B1 division: For teams at, or just below the A division team's in competitive experience and, generally, size. In this age group, the teams are sometimes assigned by HS staff or UC Bantam staff as well.
- B2 division: These teams are often at the same level as B teams while possibly having less competitive experience and/or size. These teams are also sometimes assigned by HS staff or Utah Bantam staff.
- B3 division: For teams that are similar to B2, but have a little less experience, are gifted at other sports and playing basketball for the winter and are still learning the game etc. Teams that have had below .500 records in B2 or struggled in B1. Newer, inexperienced teams looking to improve belong here as well.
Boys 6th, 5th, and 4th Grades
- A division: Teams with a high amount of competitive experience and size belong in this division. Teams that have played in UC Bantam or other leagues in the past and have had a fair amount of success should play in this division.
- B division: Teams just below the A division teams with a bit less competitive experience and size. Teams that have been in the upper half of the B division of Utah Bantam in prior seasons belong here.
- B2 division: Teams with little or no competitive experience and/or size should choose this division. Teams that have finished in the middle to bottom half of the B league in past Utah Bantam seasons should choose this division. Teams with players just learning basketball basics also belong here.
Girls 8th, 7th and 6th Grade Divisions
- A division: Teams with a high amount of competitive experience and taller players belong in this division. Teams that have played in Utah Bantam or other leagues in the past and have had a fair amount of success should play in this division.
Girls 5th Grade, 4th Grade Divisions & 3rd Grade Divisions (3rd Grade SLC ONLY)
- A divisions: Teams with a bit of competitive experience and taller players belong in this division. Teams that have played in Utah Bantam or other leagues in the past and have had a fair amount of success should play in this division. Teams that finished at upper 2/3rds of the B league last season. Teams that have players with higher skill levels that have had exposure to fundamentals etc. Press is permitted all game in A divisions.
- B division only: Teams that are new to the game, or relatively new, should be in this division.

Coaches manual
Below is a link to a coaches manual written by a professional coach and educator, Mike May, that is especially geared toward coaching youth teams. Mike is currently Alpine School District Athletic Director.
Please take a few moments to review it as there is something in it for coaches of all experience levels.
Print this score sheet and bring a copy to all games in case of technology problems.
Adding a player to the roster
Players can be added to a team’s roster before the season and even during the first 3 weeks of the season (up to the holiday break). Additionally, players can be added due to sickness, injury or other circumstances during the season.
- Go to the all ball app (look at the "Our Technology" tab on the top right).
- Log into your account
- Click team on the bottom right
- Click Invite team members
Make a team
Many Players miss tryouts or for whatever reason are not able to find a team. To organize a team, here are a few easy steps.
These formed teams can play in any division EXCEPT 8A or 7A of the boys league.
To form a team:
- Have players and coaches from the same HS area. Recommend 7-8 players and 1-2 coaches (parent coaches encouraged) Your team will be given a name representing the HS area represented (West Lake -Coaches Name, Timpview -Coaches Name, Orem -Coaches Name, etc) To get players here are some ideas:
- Go to the Bantam Tab, and click on Find a Team. Go through the list to find players in your area. Also list your team as looking in your area.
- Network with neighbors, friends and others coaching in the league.
- Contact players parents that have played with your player in the past in basketball as well as other sports.
- Register players and coaches with AAU by going to Bantam Details/AAU# in the links on this site. AAU cards will be good for players and coaches to participate in any other AAU leagues, tournaments or sports until 8/31 of each year. (9/1 to 8/31 yearly)
- Obtain uniforms. Utah Bantam asks teams to at least have matching (or very close) jerseys with numbers. Reversible jerseys are best. Old Jr. Jazz uniforms are ok, provided they match (or very close). repeat numbers on old Jr. Jazz uniforms are discouraged by OK. There are several companies locally as well as online options. Be sure to let your provider know your deadline.
- Register with Utah Bantam by going to the All Ball app. (Check “Our Technology”)
- Schedule practice time locally. Insurance for use at local school districts is available under Coach Tools.
All that is left is to enjoy a fun season for the players, coaches and their families. Always remember we are guests of the schools we are in and they are very gracious with the use of their facilities for this program.
